When you hear the word steampunk, what thoughts leap to your mind? You may picture an unsettling image of The Half-Face Man from the hit British TV series Dr. Who, antagonizing a breathless Clara Oswald with his mechanical stare. You may think of Captain Nemo, in search of the deadly narwhal sea beast on board his submarine the Nautilus. Both of these imaginings would be accurate. Steampunk is generally defined as a kind of futuristic science fiction as people living in the 19th century—the time settings of Dr. Who and Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Seas—might have envisioned it.

At the Hypso 25 coffee shop, bar and restaurant in Romania’s ancient city of Constanta, you’re going to envision things that way too. The bistro’s designers, 6th Sense interiors., make sure of it with a style heavily influenced by the works of nineteenth century author Jules Verne. You don’t walk into Hypso 25 so much as plunge, with instant transition to an 1870 realm of water and machines. From the jellyfish overhead lights rigged with twisty metallic tentacles to the clockwork copper skeletons of mechanical fish mounted within heavy Victorian frames. From the drinks served with small treasure chests to the telephone that resembles something Captain Nemo might use to shout orders to his harried crew. A visit to Hypso 25 is like a visit to a past the never was. A time dreamed but never realized. A world wished for and here at last obtained, if only for the length of your visit.

Designers 6th Sense interiors are no stranger to steampunk. He has created other such atmospheres for other locations in Romania, as well as Greece. For Hypso 25 he practices his expertise on a more cozy scale, bringing the influence of Jules Verne at times right up to the very tables at which visitors experience their stay.

That stay will be a happy one not only because of the design. Hypso 25 serves breakfast, lunch, drinks and coffee. A friendly, welcoming staff prepares your order with the care of a French novelist proofreading his magnum opus. Groups are welcome. So are children. Take out your order, or walk in without a reservation. At Hypso 25 it’s all about comfort food in a steampunk fantasy.

Hypso 25 is located in Constanta’s picturesque Ovidiu Square, the oldest part of a city founded in 600 BC. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or an evening drink, it makes for a perfect side-step into alternative history while you tour the sites and sounds of this wondrous metropolis on the edge of the Black Sea. Exploring The Haunted Manor In Gdansk, Poland

In Gdansk – a charming city in Northern Poland – there is a hill. Some people still calling it “Devil’s Hill” The old legend says that ages ago this little hill surrounded by deep forest and swamps was favorite place for witches and gatherings, during which some nasty types of demons were summoned.
Legend also says that a very big stone on the top of the hill was brought there by a devil.
Since 1886 mansion was a home for Zinglers restaurant, between 1925 and 1933 it became a HQ of Gdansk Freemason’s lodge.
After WW2 for a many years it used to be local TV station headquarters, before that many occupants were selling the building as they have been disturbed by ”unknown” forces.
Today the Grade II building stays derelict. No one cares about it. Inside many unstable floors. South wing of building didn’t survive last winter ( two floors collapsed ) whole building still standing thanks to solid external wall.

The architecture of the 19th century « Zakopianski style » (or Witkiewicz Style) is an art style, most visible in architecture, but also found in furniture and related objects, inspired by the regional art of Poland’s highland

Inspired by this cultural heritage and the famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi, Sebastian Piton has created houses straight out of fairy tales.

Very early on, Sebastian Piton began woodworking with his grandfather and his uncle both carpenters. Strengthened by his family heritage and experience, during his studies he was charmed by Gaudi’s softened roof curves, balconies and fantastic fireplaces.

Architect Spends 45 Years Transforming An Old Abandoned Cement Factory Into A Fairy Tale Home

In the early 1970s, when Ricardo Bofill, then a young architect, fell in love with a cement factory abandoned since 1968 in Sant Just Desvern, a suburb of Barcelona, he was struck by love at first sight.

Driving to the western suburbs of Barcelona, the landscape in Sant Just Desvern featured blocks of concrete, enormous silos, chimneys exhaling smoke. Still active at the time, the 31,000-square-meter industrial complex was to be dismantled a month after that visit. For the architect, it was the perfect opportunity to satisfy his longing for space. Taking care of that decaying factory, he could give it a second life.

« During my first visit to the cement factory, I suddenly thought that the horrible could be turned into beautiful, in the same way that idiocy can sometimes be turned into genius. By changing the way of looking at the object, as if through a kaleidoscope, I began to imagine the different aesthetic systems included in this work: brutalism, through the hard and sculptural treatment of the material; surrealism, through the uselessness, the paradox of stairs going nowhere or pure broken volumes; abstraction, through the stripping of forms and lines in space. I’ve decided to keep this factory, to turn ugliness into a work of art and to set up my studio inside. »

The industrial settlement originally consisted of 30 monumental siloes, four kilometres spanning a web of underground tunnels, and various large rooms devoted to hosting machinery.

See how the property went from an old industrial site to a luscious and liveable space.

After three years of colossal work, the architect moved his agency called Taller de Arquitectura there, and he also decided to live there, from 1974.

Victoria Brown : Victorian Steampunk Bar in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Victoria Brown Bar located in the Palerno neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina is a cross between a salute to Queen Victoria, and and the speakeasy of the 1920s prohibition era. The bar itself looks like it was secretly built inside an old factory and it’s steampunk elements are unmistakable.

The walls are brick and old pipes run across the ceiling and some of the walls, and what looks like old drums serve as lamp shades. Metal elevator cages serve as dividers for some of the seating and the wooden tables and large chairs definitely have an Victorian era feeling to the bar. There are even high factory style windows providing light to the interior of the bar.

Above the bar itself is a large clock with the gears exposed providing an interesting focal point to the entire room. Even the wooden shelves in the bar are mounted on top of pipes, giving more of factory feel and steampunk look to the entire place.

The bathroom carries through the steampunk theme with exposed copper water pipes running from sink to sink and old fashioned faucets and handles attached to the pipes.

The building itself was actually once a warehouse, making this the perfect place for a steampunk themed bar, as the very building lends itself nicely to the theme and the decor.

The wall in front of the bar seems to set the tone for the entire interior decor since it is decorated with assorted gears and metal elements which gives this bar the overall steampunk look and feel. The rest of the decor, echo the steampunk elements introduced by the bar wall retaining the warehouse or factory feel of the entire place.

Visitors to Victoria Brown love the decor and state it is a great place to enjoy a modern cocktail with an old fashioned name. It’s a great place for those looking for something a bit different than the ultra modern club scene when going out for the evening.

Artists Creates Floating Worlds In Test Tubes

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the floating test tube art that Dutch artist Rosa de Jong creates is both amazing and truly beautiful.

de Jong’s miniature sculptures suspended in a test tube is a new and unique take on those old tired ships in a bottle that were once so popular. de Jong creates her art from object finds in the great out of doors using objects such as sticks her cat brings her, to rocks from campsites on Curacao and even sand from the Monument valley. One of the things that makes her art work unique is the way de Jong uses suspension to make it appear as though her tiny sculptures appear to float in the air.

Each of de Jong’s creations are finely detailed and takes less than a day to complete. According to de Jong none of her artwork is planned in advance she just starts to put it together and see where it goes. So far her her test tube creations has included such miniature sculptures as trees, tiny houses, tents and even water towers. Here miniatures look so realistic many people wish they could live in the worlds that she creates.

Rosa de Jongs test tube creations are part of a series she is creating called Micro Matter. She is also in the process of setting up a web-shop where individuals may soon be able to purchase one of these miniatures to display and enjoy in their own home.

Manoir Colimaçon: An Abandoned Beauty, Near Paris, France.

Built in 1882, this superb building was originally a house with about twenty windows and a carriage entrance. Around 1920, this house was enlarged and transformed into a castle with more than 80 windows and a carriage entrance. The work would have been carried out by the architect Marcel Odin.

Abandoned since the end of the 1970s by its last owner. He does not want to sell it but wants to keep it as it is. The castle is gradually deteriorating it seems irreversibly.

The last owner, an Iranian engineer living between France and the United States is said to have abandoned the castle following a quarrel with his neighbor who was none other than the former owner.

The site is potentially dangerous and access to it is prohibited. It is partly « guarded » by the inhabitants of the neighboring farm and the maintenance of the park (the lawns) is carried out by a flock of sheep from the same farm.

Abyss Pub: Underwater Steampunk Bar Concept

The Abyss Pub in San Giuliano Milanese, Italy is a bar dedicate to Kraken Lore. Once you walk into this bar and see the blue green ceiling above you with Kraken’s tentacles reaching across from the wall behind the bar, you feel as though you have suddenly been transported to an underwater world of sunken ships, and lost souls.

The decorators of this bar, Zoly Zelenyak & Tohotan Alexandru of 6th Sense Interiors, have worked hard to make give this bar a steampunk underwater theme that is sure to please most patrons. Shelving for this bar is provided by a series of row boats, that look to be partly buried in the sand under the sea, while the old fashioned phone booth, lights, musical instruments with gears attached, and the wine rack all gives a steampunk touch to the overall décor.

But it is the long coppery tentacles across the ceiling that really capture your attention, since they look like they are spread out waiting to capture anyone brave enough to try and return from their new underwater home and send them back to the watery depths.

Oddly enough the feeling of being deep under water is neither frightening or claustrophobic, but rather gives one the feeling that they are seeing the ocean from a whole new and quite comfortable perspective, since you and your friends can sit and have a toast or two to Kraken and underwater world.

Best of all you don’t need any oxygen tanks or scuba gear to enjoy this underwater experience all you need is a little imagination and we thirst to have a great time in this fantastic pub. However, after spending an hour or two enjoying the atmosphere of the abyss, you might find it takes a few minutes to step back into reality once you leave the pub and find yourself confront by day to day traffic.

So if you are looking to get away for a couple of hours, and want to enjoy a pub with a unique décor then the Abyss pub may be just the place you are seeking.

Donnie’s Bar, Sydney Australia: A New York Style Loft Bar with A Touch of Steampunk

When designer Luchetti Krelle was asked to create a New York style loft bar to Asian style Tapis on an extremely limited budget he went way out of the box, creating a moody but, warm bar from recycled materials and just a touch of steampunk thrown in for interest.

This bar features old brick walls with crates for shelving. Recycled thick wood planking form the bottom of the bar itself, and the floors have been stripped down to the concrete layer.

Part of the ceiling is covered in dark chain link fences form which small glass globed lights hand from the chain link. Stool made from wood and metal line the bar and serve as seating around the tables.

Large copper piping adds a touch of steampunk style to the overall décor, The large pipes in the bathroom carrying water to the sink as well as having lights attached reminds one of those old steam pipes and lights from earlier times and goes well with the overall old fashioned theme of the bar.

By using recycled materials in the décor of this bar, Krelle has created a comfortable old fashioned feeling environment where anyone would feel comfortable stopping by for a drink or two. Visiting this bar will remind you of sitting and watching television in your favorite old recliner or putting on those favorite old slippers that you love to much to throw out, even though there are newer ones sitting in the closet. There is just something about the overall warmth of this décor that is sure to draw you to this bar.

While this is not the type of place one visits if they want to see a full-fledged steampunk décor the bar is worth visiting for those who are interested in seeing how a few steampunk elements can add to almost any type of décor.

Romania’s Steampunk Cafe Is Geared For Beauty and Function

Everywhere you look there is something new and amazing to see. The moment you step through the door you are instantly transfixed and don’t know to where to look first. It even takes a long moment for your mind to accept what it is actually seeing.

Metallic flowers on the ceiling open and close, capturing your attention. Metallic weights shaped like golden tear drops move up and down in Sync while a giant bird takes flight overhead.

There is even a robot bicyclist wearing a gas mask with a glass globe for a head in which a plasma display shoots lightening like bolts that can clearly be seen. The kinetic energy in this bar is truly electrifying!

While each separate attraction in this cafe/bar is a true work of art in itself, combined they make an artistic statement that is almost comprehensible to those seeing it for the very first time. This is truly a unique art experience and even more unique bar experience for those who patronize this bar.

Some of the artistic highlights of this bar includes a giant clock with gears all moving seamlessly as the hands of the clock slowly rotate around.

It took the creators of this work art, Alexandru Tohotan and Zoltan Zelenyak almost two years to create their vision for this wondrous display and it is a marvel that they could put together all these moving part in such a short period of time. You can visit this bar at Cluj-Napoca luliu Maniu12 in Romania. But make sure you save plenty of time to really soak in all the sights this cafe/bar has to offer.
